Doesn’t it sound good:  Congressman-elect Dr. David Brat!   I was with my hero, Gerry Baugh, at the Brat victory party who was so thrilled to see his dream (and mine, too) come to pass.  I told the Congressman-elect not to lose his way and that I would pray for him.

I also would suggest these ideas to start out with:

1.  Since his last name is Brat, he needs to introduce a law that would allow military brats (I am a military brat – Dad worked for the PX and thus we moved about the USA and in Germany, too.) born outside the USA to run for President.  Call it the Military Brats Presidential Eligibility Act.  There are millions of military brats and many of them were born outside the USA.  I believe that they are already eligible but I also believe a law would make it clear and would honor all the military BRATS!

2.  A law that says if you win up to and including $100, it is not income for tax purposes.  There can be a limit of $600 per year on such prizes to prevent abuse.  This is the start of chipping away at the hated tax.

3.  Find three or four minor Federal programs and abolish ’em.  Team up with new Senator Ernst and call it the Make ’em Squeal Act.

4.  Have the EU attempt to influence our policies investigated with ideas to prevent it from recurring.

5.  Get rid of say, five, Federal crimes that are unnecessary such as carjacking.  States can handle this well.

6.  As part of an outreach to the African-American community, recommend to the President to issue a blanket pardon for all convicted under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.

I am sure we can come up with more.  These ought to get started with the right tone:  I’m here to do something and then after 12 years or so go back to Randolph-Macon College and teach economics and ethics.

It is always heartwarming to see such a tremendous amount of hard work being rewarded as is the case in Congressman-Elect Dave Brat’s victory. The people who behind the scene did fantastic work quietly and without a lot of fanfare especially deserve a pat on the back. All of us wish Dr. Brat success as he takes his oath of office and begins his first term .

The celebration now however comes to a close and the work begins. Dave Brat has to be held accountable, and that must be the top priority of the Patriot movement in the 7th District. It also at this point in time warrants examining just how to do that, and equally important how not to do it.

One of the glaring mistakes made over and over and over by leaders in the Patriot movement is the inability to understand what defines an effective activist, which is hopefully how they see themselves. Gladhanding with elective officials is a mistake, and it is a big one.

Politicians are always trying to ingratiate themselves with anyone who might be in a position to serve this important role, the proper role of an activist. Politicians want to neuter every critic they can and they have a very well honed methodology they employ in doing so. It is therefore incumbent on the activist to not only be aware of how this works , but wary of falling prey to it. I have watched it firsthand and seen how many of the leaders in the Patriot movement seem unaware or ignorant of how their effectiveness is undermined by this seemingly innocent association after a candidate is nominated or elected.

When Dave Brat was nominated in June he was now for me, ( as I told 3 newly elected officials in King William in 2011 on election night” on the other side”. This has to be this way. I can not, nor can any other activist leader in the Patriot movement remain “buddies” with these folks and try to hold them accountable at the same time—it won’t work. It isn’t possible to do what we must do as activists and remain on friendly terms with these folks. A distance must be maintained—AT ALL TIMES– or you have rendered your voice useless. In 2008-09 I saw first hand the same type of hero worship bestowed upon Bob McDonnell, how did that work out ? These are flesh and blood human beings that now have to held to account. We didn’t elect anyone because they are likable or personable, we elected them to do a job—period.

I hope in time a few of the leaders of these groups come to understand why this is so important. We must elect and hold accountable Leaders, not our pals. Whether we personally like them or not is a secondary consideration , properly so.

Nothing is more conservative than a republican wanting to get their majority back. And nothing is more liberal than a republican WITH a majority.
