I do admire former UN Ambassador John Bolton.  Here’s several blog posts I wrote in 2011 about Bolton (Disrupt the Narrative got into the act, too!) and I even got to meet him (I didn’t wash my hand for a week!) here in Richmond.

Now why would a non-interventionist even consider supporting a national security conservative like Bolton?  He’s great on one of the critical issues of the day:  National sovereignty.  Bolton personally was the guy who carried out President George W. Bush’s order to rescind the signature of former President Clinton on the odious International Criminal Court treaty.  I doubt President Bolton would have made the German homeschool family (Thank Jesus they are safe for now!) go through all the deportation proceedings.

Now it looks like Bolton is back:  And with Russian aggression on the front page, maybe a strong defense sovereignty candidate might be right.  I am sure he’s reasonably conservative on social issues without being threatening.  And Bolton can at least debate the issues well and is a compelling speaker.

Robert Costa is suggesting that Bolton is hiring staff – a sure sign of a run:

Over the past few months, Bolton confides, he has called veteran Republican strategists and friends from the Bush years, informally pitching them on what he envisions as a policy-driven, hawkish campaign. Most of the people on the other side of the line are surprised, even shocked, to hear that Bolton, a no-nonsense, private man, is serious. Bolton, though, presses on, and urges them to e-mail him tidbits of advice or early-state contact information. “I’ve enjoyed the process,” he says. “It’s taken some time to put together, since I’m paying close attention to the business details of how to run a PAC, like why it costs so much to do direct mail. At times, I feel like I’m back at Covington & Burling doing campaign-finance law.”

Does the ambassador need a blogger?  That makes me want to send my resume to Bolton right away!  I know my libertarian friends are shaking their heads but sovereignty is an important issue.  There is no liberty or Constitution (or rights) without sovereignty.  No pesky UN treaties in a Bolton administration.

And if Ambassador Bolton does not get the nod, he’d make a great VP!  Imagine President Paul sending his VP, John Bolton, to Russia to talk with Putin.

Great Post. I’m a libertarian constitutionalist, and my initial Reaction was NOOOO!!!

I’m also rational. We do need an expert on Foreign Affairs and syrategic diplomacy. But Vice President? How about Secretary of State?

Thanks Steven for coming by. I understand your concern. Bolton would be a great Secretary of State, too. I too am concerned but I believe that Bolton’s positions on national sovereignty and the UN make him attractive and he also would have several interesting positions: more libertarian-leaning on regulations, school choice, and he’s for gay marriage – which will be off the table in 2016. If Bolton runs I’ll almost certainly support him.
