Guest Post by Hanover Resident Rudy Burgess
As a citizen, homeowner and business owner in Hanover County, I noted with great interest Governor Bob McDonnell’s proposal of the Omnibus Transportation Funding Bill in the Senate and House of Delegates this session. Notably, the Governor has a broad bipartisan coalition of co-patrons, including Delegates Chris Peace (R-Hanover) and John Cox (R-Hanover) and Senator Ryan McDougle (R-Hanover) with nearly half of the entire Senate body signed up to sponsor the bill, including 5 Democrats.
I am encouraged that the Bill will bring new roads and infrastructure that have been long delayed to every region of the State. Now that we are coming out of a recession, this Bill will create much needed jobs, and infuse money into crumbling roads and bridges with projects from the shores of Hampton Roads to the busy corridors of Northern Virginia and the vital transportation arteries across our Blue Ridge Mountains! Specifically, the Governor’s Bill is a comprehensive transportation plan, including projects from widening I-66 in/out of the Beltway to building a new Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and completing the Coalfields Expressway.
Using its AAA bond rating and capitalizing on low construction costs and interest,
the state is also in the enviable position of being able to accelerate bonds that were approved in 2007. Passage of this jobs and roads plan will represent one of the most significant investments in state infrastructure.
Recent administrations have played politics, moved too slowly and made too many
excuses for not finding ways to make transportation a priority and get projects done! It’s time to end grid-lock and get people and businesses moving again in Virginia!
