In this week’s two local newspapers I read stories of Hamilton Holmes Middle school students  here in King William raising $1100 for the local Animal Shelter.  It described in detail how it was done, who organized it and how proud everyone was of the children’s achievement.  Pennies for Pets   fundraising drive included a daily announcement over the intercom called “ Humane Thought of the Day”.  The article was accompanied by a photo of the class , various school officials who participated, along with special mention of the schools bookkeeper who daily collected the donations and saw they were sent to the bank.

Up the road in Hanover, under the heading “ Making Community Better”  the Mechanicsville Local had their own story on the 5th grade class at Kersey Creek Elementary who worked on X-Prize projects that were to “improve the community”. Included  among the various projects  , picking up trash, visiting nursing homes, baking cookies for community members, building bird houses and selling hot chocolate for charity.

Perhaps the old adage that “ charity begins at home” would suffice, but folks …..what in the hell are we thinking ?

Recent test scores now place U.S student rankings at 26th in Math, 21st in Science, and 17th in Reading.

This is ammunition for those of us who are vocal critics of public schools, the diminished curriculum’s , the bloated staffing costs, and students being sent out at graduation who are given diplomas and can’t read beyond an 8th grade reading level.

It has been observed that U.S public school students are ranked among the  most  “compassionate” anywhere in the world  . These kids better pray that scores of jobs are available where compassion is the trait employers will be looking for.  My suspicions tell me these kids will be relegated to picking up a lot more trash in their futures because we have our collective heads screwed on backwards to stand by and idly allow this nonsense to continue.   Get these kids back to the 3 R’s……or open up school choice across the country to give the next generation a fighting chance at getting an education beyond this silliness.

  1. Mad Parents in Beaverdam says:

Meanwhile at Beaverdam Elementary School in Hanover County where the toilets don’t flush and the children often don’t have running water to WASH THEIR LITTLE HANDS after going NUMBER 2
the school PRINCIPAL spent tens of thousands of tax payer and hard earned PTA dollars on a program called “LEADER IN ME.” In an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL where the pitiful school playground has been boarded up for years deemed not safe for use.

And the School Board Chairman, John Axselle from BEAVERDAM who was appointed by Supervisor Buckey Stanley, is a pencil salesman who flunked out of VA Tech his first year approved this “Leader in Me program” while the school board can’t provide basic sanitation for the children.

The time has come in Hanover County to elect School Boards and get back to the basics of education not checking off programs for principals climbing the ladder to the Adminstrative Office.

There needs to be an investigation into the missing FUNDS at that school.

    • Fairfax County school nurse says:

If the claims made in the post above are indeed true that soap and running water are not available in the bathrooms for hand washing in an elementary school, parents should immediately notify the Hanover County Health Department.

Lack of proper sanitation is a public health threat for the spread of communicable diseases among other things.

  2. Trump Watcher says:

Very disappointed in Trump’s speech today where he said he had spoken with McAuliffe and assured him only serious crime illegals were going to be deported. This has been DHS’s Kelly’s line also. This makes the Trump campaign a lie, just like Hillary’s. Trump promised to deport illegals. Also, no end in sight for Obamacare. And, Trump has apparently jumped half way in bed with communist China.

Starting to look like it was/is all a lie, all talk. All I wanted Trump to do is what he said he would. Looks like it’s become “MAKE WALL STREET GREAT”.

Wall St. is up, but how much have middle-class America paychecks gone up? How much cheaper is your healthcare.

  3. Trump Watcher says:

It would be hilarious to see the Republican response if it had been a Democrat that had spoken the identical words Trump did last night.

Increased spending, tax cuts, Trillion Dollar infrastructure spending, (shovel ready) affordable healthcare plan coming, reading from a TelePrompTer, promises for change, that keep changing. chasing down leaks, Sound familiar?

Yes, it does sound familiar. We did get a Republican response, 8 years ago. We heard most of the same 8 years ago, dudes name was Obama.
