MIXED FEELINGS in the SEVENTH DISTRICT RACE: VA’s FIRST SPEAKER since 1843 or a UKIP-STYLE EARTHQUAKE here in VIRGINIA by a candidate I really like?

You knew I would work UKIP into this blog post, didn’t you.  But it really is relevant.  But first a history lesson:

John Winston Jones

Who was he?

John Winston Jones was the last Speaker of the House from Virginia.  (There may have been Speakers such as Hanover’s own Henry Clay who were born in VA but ran from elsewhere but Jones is the last one from Virginia!)  He served from 1843 to 1845.  (I had guessed to a friend and mentor of mine who was a long time in GOP politics that the last VA Speaker was about 1820!  Only about 25 years off!)

Here is Jones’ bio from the House website:

JONES, John Winston, a Representative from Virginia; born near Amelia Court House, Amelia County, Va., November 22, 1791; attended private schools; was graduated from the law department of the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., in 1813; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Chesterfield County, Va.; prosecuting attorney for the fifth Virginia circuit in 1818; member of the State constitutional convention in 1829 and 1830; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Democrat to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1835-March 3, 1845); chairman, Committee on Ways and Means (Twenty-sixth Congress); Speaker of the House of Representatives (Twenty-eighth Congress); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1844; resumed the practice of law and also engaged in agricultural pursuits; member of the State house of delegates in 1846 and served as speaker; reelected in 1847 but resigned on account of ill health; died at his residence, “Dellwood,” in Chesterfield County, Virginia, January 29, 1848; interment in the family cemetery on his estate, “Dellwood,” northwest of Petersburg, Va.

If Cong. Eric Cantor is renominated by the GOP on June 10 he’ll almost certainly be the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.  Now I once introduced my oldest daughter to Cong. Cantor during the Dark Age of the Pelosi years as a future Speaker of the House.  He waved it off humbly.  I would desperately like to see both a Virginia Speaker and a Virginia President (The last serious candidate for President for Virginia was Senator Carter Glass [I can hear my readers say:  Who?  Here’s his bio.  One more thing about Glass:  He was one of the few Americans who while living was on a coin – this commemorative fifty cent piece.] who would probably have been nominated in 1924 on the 104th ballot by the Dems, according to Davis’ biographer William H. Harbaugh, [and surely would have lost] by my legal hero John W. Davis, who should have turned down that last case of his, was nominated on the 103th ballot instead!) but I am torn in my decision.  It’s two good choices.  With all due respect for the valiant Libertarian candidate, James Carr, he does not have a prayer of winning in the general election but if Carr makes the ballot he could get 20-30% of the vote.  Maybe 35%.

I also have great respect for Dr. David Brat.  Not a liberal or radical professor, Dr. Brat would be an asset to the Congress.  That is why I have helped him in this primary.  I do agree Cong. Cantor is a solid conservative.  But I cannot stand the lies and halftruths proclaimed and in my mailbox nearly every day from the Congressman’s campaign.  I intend to walk through a gasoline fire to vote for Dr. David Brat.  That is not a blog endorsement unless Tom White adds to this post to make it so.

By the way, radio columnist Laura Ingraham will be in town to campaign for Dr. Brat Tuesday along with my old hero, Ambassador Alan Keyes and Virginia Right endorsed Senate candidate Shak Hill.  Here’s the details from the Brat campaign:

We are excited to announce that conservative talk show host and Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham is coming to Richmond this Tuesday to join Dave for a rally in Eric Cantor’s own neighborhood – the Dominion Country Club. Laura is a principled conservative that is an outspoken advocate against amnesty for illegal aliens and for the American worker. Alan Keyes and Shak Hill will also be joining Dave at the rally. This is a great chance to introduce a friend or two to Dave, especially those who think that he is a “liberal college professor.” After a rally like this, no doubt about Dave’s conservative credentials should remain!

Where: Dominion Country Club- 6000 Dominion Club Dr. Glen Allen, Va
When: Tuesday, June 3rd 7 pm

I wonder if a blogger can sneak in to this event?  Might have to call Dr. Brat and ask him!

I think if Dr. Brat wins, it will be a political earthquake equal to or maybe greater than UKIP’s dramatic win in the UK last week.  All politicians throughout the nation would know:  You are accountable to the people (and to God, too but that’s a different issue!) and don’t forget it!  Let’s bring a UKIP earthquake to Virginia.

About Elwood Sanders

Sandy was also Virginia's first Appellate Defender and also helped bring curling in VA! (None of these titles imply any endorsement of Sanders’ views)

Cantor has lost a lot of clout because of the loarge uprising in the 7th. He is now less likely to become speaker as a result.

But I would prefer a great congressman in Dave Brat to a poor speaker any day.

What are u smoking? You “agree Cong. Cantor is a solid conservative”?

You should change the “is” to “was” and stop drinking Cantor’s cool-aid.

Nothing is more conservative than a republican wanting to get their majority back. And nothing is more liberal than a republican WITH a majority.
