The video makes the argument that we were all silent. Lies! The Government spends too much because we as a society allowed ourselves to become over streched and take too many responsibilities. We weren’t “silent”.

We allowed ourselves to believe in a fantasy where Government could give us all the answers, and all the solutions, while simultaneously giving us more money (tax-cuts). We supported leaders who ushered in multi-billion tax cuts with no plans to balance the equation on the spending side. We supported leaders who said that they could deploy into foreign nations, bring democracy while not requiring the support, sacrifice or resolve of the American people. We supported leaders who told us there were no problems to speak of, and we are still supporting leaders that tell us we can have our cake and eat too (I tend to be VERY distrustful when I see an ad for congress saying he’ll cut your taxes, increase military funding and balance the budget all with a magic wand).

The problem with the Tea Party is that they try to make us believe in an exact opposite fair land. A lot of these Tea Party Rallies I’ve seen (in video) have tried to make the argument that just freezing spending and cutting taxes is the answer. There shall be sacrifice we will have to make. We’re going to have to learn that when going line by line through governmental operations, we cannot simply say “wasteful spending” and not realize that we end up losing something our society has become accustomed too.

The most sensible solution for me still is to return the tax rate to the start of George W. Bush’s term. Yes it was higher for some Americans, but not unfair or oppressive. We have to understand that the only true way for the United States of America to have economic solvency is either to cut the spending, and freeze tax cuts (which we will all feel in some way, shape or form) or to cut the spending and raise taxes. We have more than a spending problem. We have a revenue problem. Now, I know that’s the argument a lot of tax and spend liberals may use, but I say our revenue problem stems from the fact that we blindly followed leaders who were okay with cutting taxes and raising spending.

We can’t have it all. We have to learn that to go to better economic times, we have to make sacrifice. Sacrifice is not something our society is accustomed to these days. We got engaged in 2 wars, yet our taxes went down, our food supply remained unchanged, in fact, Americans could live life blissfully unaware that soldiers were dieing on the front. We got engaged in a Financial Bail Out, yet the only thing our Government said was “They’re too big to fail!” and we were told everything would be all right without our worries. Well, they were wrong.

Yes, we should stand up and speak out. But we should know that there is no silver bullet, and if we want to believe the fantasy that our leaders should have this non-existent silver bullet, well then we’re just asking to be deceived. Leaders – even grass-roots leaders like the Tea Parties – will all tell you have the perfect cure, be it more Government Intervention, or a non-specific anti-establishment riot. And they will lie to you. And It’s going to be the easiest lie they’ve ever had to tell, and we’ll believe it and elect them into office.

Well, that’s my entire rant on why the Tea Party is an equally bad alternative to Obama!

Good analysis, Venu. But your conclusion is based on several incorrect assumptions about the Tea Party. First, TEA stands for Taxed Enough Already. And yes, lower taxes are a major point of the “platform”.

But you are confusing Republicans with Tea Party folks when you say we want to lower taxes and freeze spending. The Republican party has run on lower taxes and smaller government for years. And government has grown exponentially.

The one aspect that you left out in your “either / or” possibilities is the fact that the Tea Party does not want to slow or stop growth. They want to REVERSE it. Eliminate the massive departments that are sitting on our backs.

You have fallen into the media hype that would have you believe the Tea Party is the radical right wing of the Republican Party. The fact is, many in the movement have just as much, if not more, disdain for Republicans as they do towards Progressives. Most think that while the Progressives are Socialists or worse and will infinitely grow government and raise taxes, the Republicans have done the same thing but LIE ABOUT IT! And many believe that is simply insidious.

If the Tea Party supports a Republican Candidate, you can bet a lot of work has gone into vetting the person as one who understands the Constitution and the Founding Father’s vision. And I promise you that if the candidate betrays us with their votes once in office, the same people that helped them into office will either field a Republican Primary candidate, or run as a grass roots third party like NY-23. And while putting a Democrat in the seat is a horrible outcome if a 3rd party candidate fails to win, most see that outcome as a better alternative to a lying Republican “RINO”.

I have told you before that I respect your views and opinions, while I may not agree with you 100%. You are an amazingly intelligent young man with wisdom well beyond your years.

Here is a proposition. Attend the Richmond Tea Party and do a write up of your experience and I will publish it unedited on my blog with the caveat that it is your opinion and may not reflect the opinions of myself or Sandy Sanders, the other Virginia Right! blogger. Sandy and I agree on a lot, but we have the same caveat.

I can’t promise anything, but I will ask if you can have credentials to be “back stage” with me. I will be live blogging from the event.

I am absolutely confident that you will be shocked and amazed at how much disinformation is being spread about the Tea Party. These are truly Patriotic Americans who do not care about anything other than scaling back the size and reach of the Federal Government.

    Are you game?

  3. Venu says:

    Tom,

Sound interesting, but I’d rather not forgo school and other activities for a political rally. If you have any video of the event afterwords, I hope you’d upload them onto Virginia Right! so I might take a look.

    • Tom White says:

Well, it is an evening rally. Opens at 5:30 with music and WRVA Radio’s Doc Thompson, and the program starts at 6:30 and ends at 8:30.

I can get Ken Cuccinelli to write you an excuse letter for homework if you want. (Just joking.)

Of course, I have no idea where you live and Richmond might involve a drive for you.

Most of the event will be recorded, if not all. I will put up the video after they upload it, and plan to upload photos and video live.

But if you want to attend, you will be welcomed.

Nothing is more conservative than a republican wanting to get their majority back. And nothing is more liberal than a republican WITH a majority.
