USA Today iPad App to Remain Free Through 3Q

Gannett CEO Craig Dubow said during the company’s second-quarter earnings call that its iPad app for USA Today would remain free-of-charge and ad-supported at least through the third quarter of this year,paidContent reported. Dubow also said USA Todayapps for the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android platforms have been downloaded more than 5 million times over the past 18 months, adding that three companies signed on as sponsors for the iPad app: Coca-Cola, Chrysler, and Barnes & Noble, according to paidContent.

Mathieson Aide Embezzled More Than $52,000

Amended campaign documents show a former legislator’s aide who was recently sentenced to prison spent more than $52,000 on unauthorized trips to night clubs, liquor stores and restaurants.

Jason Robinson was sentenced last month to three years and ordered to pay back the money that he took from former Del. Bobby Mathieson‘s campaign funds. Robinson’s illegal spending spree lasted from January 2008 through September 2009, when he also used the funds for convenience store purchases and for a personal gym membership. That’s according to an analysis of the reports provided by the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonprofit tracker of money in Virginia politics. The 26-year-old had worked for the Democrat Mathieson since 2007. Mathieson was defeated last year.

George Allen: Raising Money Like He’s Running

He may not be formally running for office at the moment, but former Sen. George Allen (R) posted impressive fundraising totals for the reporting period ending June 30. According to records filed with the Federal Election Commission, Allen’s political action committee Good Government for America collected $314,595 from April 1 to June 30. After spending $86,458 during the period, the committee ended the period with $252,074 in the bank. Allen’s political future is the focus of intense speculation in Virginia. Asked whether he might challenge Sen. Jim Webb (D) to regain the Senate seat Webb won from him in 2006, Alllen has repeatedly said “perhaps.” He gave that answer as recently as Wednesday.

Virginia’s Vulnerable Dems Have More Cash

Virginia’s four potentially vulnerable Democratic members of Congress all have commanding financial leads over their opponents, giving them a key strategic advantage as they battle anti-incumbent head winds between now and November.Reports filed with the Federal Election Commission show that Democratic Reps. Rick Boucher (VA-9), Gerald E. Connolly (VA-11), Glenn Nye (VA-2) and Tom Perriello (VA-5) each ended the second quarter of the year with at least $1.3 million in the bank, while their four GOP challengers each had less than $300,000 available as of June 30.
