There is an interesting article about the new Trotskyist elected to the Seattle City Council in the LA Times.  Here’s a highlight or two and my thoughts:

“We don’t need the executives!” cried Seattle’s first elected Socialist in living memory, as the damp crowd cheered and rush-hour traffic hummed slowly by. “We need Boeing to be under democratic public ownership by workers — by the community!”

Shades of 1905!  The millennials, few of whom if any lived with a Soviet Union (Thank God!) will have to go read about why that date is significant!  But the LA Times did not help.  They called her a socialist.  She’s a Trotskyist.  There is a big difference between Norman Thomas and Leon Trotsky.  In fact neither the word “Trotsky” or “Trotskyist” did not appear at all in this article.  A few words about her party might have done it.  Perhaps they were afraid of being called a McCarthyite.

(What McCarthy did wrong was call innocent people communists and used associations to taint people.  The left is good at that – Pat Buchanan was alluded to be a white supremacist many years ago when he ran for President because a speaker at his rally actually SPOKE at different rally where another person spoke with dubious ties and there were [GASP!] Confederate flags in attendance!  But it is not wrong to call a REAL communist a communist but Sawant if a Trotskyist but I’d rather stick with that term and educate the people on what a Trotskyist IS!)

But it is the duty of the LA Times to REPORT the news!  Even if it means calling a Trotskyist what she is.  Not a socialist.  Wait, there’s more:

Sawant did not officially call herself a Socialist until after she moved here in 2006, but she says she thinks she always leaned that way. “I just didn’t know it for most of my childhood,” she said. “My earliest memory growing up in Mumbai was looking at the ocean of poverty and misery around me and seeing great wealth at the same time.”

That disparity sparked outrage in her, along with the belief that there is money enough to salve human suffering — “but that there are political obstacles,” she said.

What are the political obstacles?  Is it up against the wall with the capitalists as Lenin and his followers did to the Tsar and his family?  Inquiring minds want to know.  But they won’t get it from the LA Times.

Sawant claims that Seattle is unlivable (In spite of the fact that the other eight council members are Democrats!) for ordinary people.  Might have to check into that.  Ought to be a few foreclosures in town.

One thing I actually agree with Prof. Sawant about is the salaries of City Council members:  She’ll forgo the $120k salary and take a worker’s paycheck instead!  (Talk about a living wage!)  What an idea!  Maybe she could come to Henrico and talk to the Board  about the embarrassment of paying a superintendent nearly $200k to get rid of him.  That’s three teachers, maybe more, annual salary and bennies, too!

I hope a blogger in Seattle will make this his or her project:  Covering the new Trotksyist during her term.  I am sure I’ll help.
