I think it’s a good thing in this case that Obama turned away from such a crazy idea. By placing cameras in the room, you put all Senators to the mercy of the electorate, and no longer will practical and (relatively) good solution be hashed out, but it becomes every Senator gunning for a 1 liner and a soundbite to put in a reelection campaign,

So you prefer that the Democrat leaders lock the doors, hide from the public and make more back room bribes without the American people – for whom they work – having any input, feedback or even an idea of what they are doing to us?

Candidate Obama complained that the Republicans were not open enough (even though the Democrats controlled both houses). Under his leadership, the Democrats would be transparent and nothing like the Republicans had been.

    Open, honest government.

The reason for not doing this on C-Span is that if the American people know what they are doing, this bill is so horrendous that it will die right there.

It’s been one of the fundamental principles of our Democracy for the emphasis on Congress to be to legislate the best course of action. I’m not in support of what you’re describing, but it’s important to have a universal principles and respect the rule of law (we should have the same measures for whatever bill was being negotiated). One of my favorite quotes comes from Edmund Burke, “Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays instead of serving you if he sacrifices it to your opinion.”.

Essentially, we cannot become a Nation of irrational action, if only because our Opinion has been formed too hastily. The Court of Public Opinion is neither fair nor contains depth in it’s review of evidence.

There was a specific reason that our Founders chose a Republic as opposed to a Democracy in their writings. It was because only an informed people could adequately governed. This is not to say that the Public is by nature unintelligent, but that it is not surprising that we are more haste in our decision when not presented with all the quantifying variables.

Because of this, the only balance was/is to have the people elect a representative to place their judgment in and decide whether or not to revoke it in the period until their next election. The American people SHOULD be able to look at any bill that comes to the floor of the Senate. But why should they be allowed to watch the discussions occuring behind closed door? It’s almost as to destroy the entire fabric of the legislative system that has defined our country for centuries.

Nothing is more conservative than a republican wanting to get their majority back. And nothing is more liberal than a republican WITH a majority.
