The Opening Ceremony was very good; better than expected.  I love the athletes coming in, especially the small nations, (Go Andorra!) and I was not pleased that a number of nations selected a NHL player to carry their flag.  No glory for sports imperialism of pros in the Games!

The smaller nations get my attention as a protest against the sports imperialism of the pro athletes like men’s hockey and the attitude of many that the US in entitled to win millions of medals when many nations seldom of ever medal.  Then we have rules and programs and policies that exclude so many nations from a chance to win any medal at all.

I did think the Opening Ceremony was impressive.  My favorite part was ironically the Soviet part with the nice march.  They did paper over the evils of communism but I can understand (We paper over a few things like the Civil War, too!) but it was interesting.  And I saw the first women in space:  Valentina Tereshkova!  Of course authoritarian regimes can do these sort of things better than democracies but that is not a compliment:  More people are involved in the process in democracies.  I also think there is too much spent on these ceremonies.  Maybe the next Olympics could hire Pope Francis to supervise the ceremony.  I think the money is better spent on the poor or AIDS research or something like that.

Now the Games begin!
