Bearing Drift reported this story [by Brian Kirwin] on the Susan Stimpson campaign mailer attacking Speaker Howell for his association with an unknown corrupt politician:

Tried to Halt Corruption Investigation

“[The Speaker]…offered himself as a character witness for a government official who was convicted of 11 corrpution counts.”

That was in fact former Governor McDonnell.  You know how I feel about that.  I agree with the Speaker about the need for prayer:

Speaker Bill Howell has known Bob McDonnell for decades. They started a bible (sic – should be “Bible”) study and prayer group together that the Speaker still leads today. McDonnell attended one earlier this year. The House even awarded Howell and McDonnell the “BFF” award in one of their session-ending ceremonies. Speaker Bill Howell attended the appeals hearing and testified as a character witness for Bob McDonnell.

Howell released this statement then:

“I have known Bob McDonnell for a long time and consider him a close friend. I am heartbroken by the pain he and his family have suffered and by what this means for Virginia. Cessie and I offer our sincerest prayers for the McDonnell family during this difficult time.”

Now I like Susan Stimpson.  She’s had (and perhaps has) great potential in politics.  A record of accomplishment.  But this is the wrong race at the wrong time.  I am sure Speaker Howell has made mistakes.  But if conservatives help him in the primary, we gain the right to be heard in the future.  But this McDonnell thing finally did it – I was going to endorse the Speaker anyway but this proved it.  So I’ll encourage others to vote Howell in the primary next Tuesday.  Don’t let Democrats or others claim this “victory”.  Get out for Speaker Howell.

  1. Stimpson Supporter says:

The real Crimes committed by Speaker Howell and Bob McDonnell are the largest tax increases in Virginia history- the unconstitutional Transportation Bill passed by a Republican Governor, Republican House of Delegates, and Republican Majority in the state senate.

That’s why you shouldn’t vote for Bill Howell.

Vote Susan Stimpson Tuesday June 9th and for Fiscal Conservates

  2. Jerry Gore says:

Experienced politicians know that the average voter is: (1) ill informed & disinterested (i.e.. low-information-voters); (2) generally forgiving of other’s mistakes, especially when it doesn’t hurt them personally; (3) generally ignorant of the concept that all those in public service are expected to exercise due diligence in avoiding even the perception of wrong-doing or thinking that handing out small favors is acceptable behavior for those who help get one elected; (4) turn a blind eye (cutting corners) while providing “constituent services” in exchange for receiving “tokens of appreciation” from donors and businesses who want a “leg-up-advantage” to operate in our state. When a politician has been in office for lengthy periods as were McDonnell and currently Howell, they find very little wrong, or even unsavory, about helping each other out, and offering solace in their moments of discovered character flaws, failure to use good judgment, or an absence of ethics and proper public moral accountability. McDonnell took himself down because of his character flaws whereas Howell is now skating on his slippery slope because of his unbelievably horrible voting record on taxes, spending, unfunded mandates to local government, deliberate lack of transparency in state government regarding killing-bills-in-committee and avoidance of recorded voting on many many bills to provide cover and protection to House members AND HIMSELF! Howell has accumulated so many warts and has left a trail of so much evidence leading directly to his earned reputation as the one individual most responsible for doubling our taxes and spending in just 10 years–HE MUST BE REMOVED TO RESTORE FISCAL SANITY TO VIRGINIA GOVERNMENT!

  3. Stimpson’s campaign was willing to kick Governor McDonnell to the curb when he is down (and it also claimed that Speaker Howell took money from gay activists but the money from Equality Virginia went to the Dominion Leadership Trust not the Speaker (next paragraph is from her email to millions of people including me):

Equality Virginia is a repeat donor to Delegate Bill Howell in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Equality Virginia has even given Bill Howell more campaign cash than Attorney General Mark Herring, who has been at the forefront of advocating for their radical anti-family agenda at the expense of the rule of law.

I think I’ll go with the Speaker this time. I am willing to help Stimpson in a future campaign. But she owes the Speaker an apology.
