Sandy has a very important announcement!

What what!  Is it:

  1. He’s hired by Nigel Farage to help UKIP win the Reckless riding…and I could help I think!  But it’s not that.

2.  He has a Fox News show!  I think I could do that and I’d like the company of pundits like Hannity and O’Reilly and the numerous attractive women on those shows!  But it’s not that either and I’m not on the View!

3.  He’s coaching the Botswana curling team!  No, I want them (when they are formed) to actually win.

4.  So, Sandy must be running for something, isn’t he…well…integrity requires me to say what is going on since it affects the blog.

ACTUALLY, as perhaps a reader or two will find out Tuesday when the Virginia Lawyer’s Weekly comes out – Sandy has decided to seek a seat on the Virginia Court of Appeals.

Judge Sanders?  Why?  I think I can make a difference and I respect the robe and what it stands for.   I have scholarly legal writing (google me at Google Scholar to see the, perhaps, dark side of Elwood Earl Sanders, Jr.) and practice-oriented writing and presentations on appellate procedure, I was Virginia’s first Appellate Defender and finally have been an adjunct at six different colleges or universities.  I also have practiced law in Virginia for nearly 30 years (even though I don’t look it, praise Jesus!).

How does it go?

First statewide bar associations interview and vote on judicial candidates then the General Assembly interviews the finalists and decides on vacancies.  There is one Supreme Court of Virginia vacancy that will likely be filled with a Court of Appeals judge and if so, there will be another vacant seat on that court in addition to the two to be vacated by the retirements of  Chief Judge Felton and Judge Frank of the Court of Appeals.  These three seats have drawn at least 25 people seeking a seat on one or the other of the courts.  I thought it would be presumptuous to seek a Supreme Court seat (if the General Assembly selected me to the state supreme court I might be tempted to say what Bill Buckley quipped if he was elected Mayor of NYC – ask for a recount!) but I have been encouraged to seek a seat on the Court of Appeals.  There are 140 voters in this election:  100 delegates and 40 state senators.  So, I better get out there and say hello to the voters…

And because I am running for a politically charged position:  I will not discuss state or national politics that touches Virginia until this is decided.  I also do not plan to vote on blog endorsements unless this is resolved before the November elections.  I do not expect that to occur.  But I am not leaving the blog – I do expect I can still blog on UKIP and related issues.

About Elwood Sanders

Elwood "Sandy" Sanders is a Hanover attorney who is an Appellate Procedure Consultant for Lantagne Legal Printing and has written ten scholarly legal articles. Sandy was also Virginia's first Appellate Defender and also helped bring curling in VA! (None of these titles imply any endorsement of Sanders’ views)

I have had the distinct honor of coming to know Sandy over the last 5 years and can say with certainty I’ve yet to meet a man with more integrity and intellect.

Virginia would be well served indeed to have a man of his talents ,knowledge and integrity . I consider him a man who today has few peers in the legal & political arena.

Sandy embodies the qualities we should use as a benchmark for all political candidates. If more men/women like Sandy Sanders held elective office today this Nation and Virginia would be in much better shape.
