It’s now official:  Sandy’s favorite Democrat – Cong. Heath Shuler of NC is running against Cong. Nancy Pelosi for minority leader.

Of course I’ll gladly root for Shuler; I admire him for this faith and his [mostly] conservative positions on the issue.  But this is a lost cause worthy of Sen. Jefferson Smith.  Shuler admits that he can’t win but wants to stand for “…every moderate Democrat in America.”  He told CNN yesterday that he’d stand if Pelosi offered herself for election:

“We’ve just come off the largest … loss for the Democratic Party in almost a century. And to be able to put Speaker Pelosi as minority leader is truly — it’s unacceptable for our party, to move our party forward in a moderate direction,” he told CNN’s Joe Johns on Sunday on “State of the Union.”

His logic is unassailable.  This is however politics not logic.  The results will not be pretty.  Shuler will lose and he’ll be punished for daring to stand up to the leadership and upsetting Pelosi’s parade.  Some sort of committee reshuffle; maybe even a 2012 primary opponent.  So where does my favorite Democrat go after this quixotic quest?  Maybe Governor of North Carolina.  Maybe.  No assurance he’ll even win the nomination.  The so-called progressives already are sore at Shuler for this move:

And they [women] certainly don’t want a Speaker of the House of the kind Shuler represents, who is more interested in acting like a right-wing conservative in Democrat’s clothing than a Democrat driven by deeply held principles, and whose modus operandi would be bending over backward to accommodate John Boehner on issues of critical concern to women, whether in regard to promised attacks on health care or in other areas such as the economy, environment, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

So, what happens to my favorite Democrat after he is defeated and punished?  Heath Shuler needs to become one of my favorite Republicans instead.
