Statement from Dave Brat on President Obama’s plan for combating ISIS

This is a statement from Dave Brat, Republican candidate for Congress (VA-07) on President Obama’s ISIS speech last night,

President Obama’s speech last night about increased airstrikes in Iraq and Syria to combat and destroy ISIS terrorists was a positive development after his earlier dismissals of their ability to threaten U.S. national security.

I am, however, deeply concerned about his plan to arm Syrian rebels.  Who exactly are we arming? What is the broader strategy?  And what is the end game?  After six years of a foreign policy of “leading from behind,” one has to ask, is this reassessment in foreign policy due to a fundamental shift in the president’s view of the U.S.’s strategic role in the world?

I was also dismayed that President Obama didn’t address the vulnerability on our own soil:  the porous southern border, where the intelligence community tells us that ISIS terrorists are planning to cross into the United States.  While sending military resources to combat terrorists in the Middle East, Obama has left the front door wide open for them.

Dr. Brat repeats what has been observed the last two days from a host of sources. What people want to hear are his own proposals to deal with this vexing problems. Their are no easy solutions, for sure, but a U.S foreign policy that leads from behind isn’t exactly what the World expects, nor can afford.

They kill us or we kill them. Sometimes foreign policy has to be that straight forward in order for our enemies to clearly understand what to expect. Reagan understood that, and we pray Dr. Brat does as well. It bears noting that their is no ambiguity in their goals. Their mission is very clear, as must be ours.

Dr. Brat might begin by calling for legislation that permits the confiscation of any U.S. passport of those that left U.S. soil to take up arms against us. Immediate deportation in the event that these citizens are on a student or temporary visa ( green card ) that does not require the due process afforded U.S. citizens. Turn them around at Customs and send them back to where they came from.

Dr. Brat, it is with the deepest regret that I don’t live in your district, and do not have a single decent Republican to vote for in November. When I look at your campaign and the campaign (or lack there of) of a Wittman or Gillespie, I realize that nothing less will do. I hope the GOP will learn from your campaign, and I hope Virginia will reject Wittman, Goodlatte, Gillespie, et. al., and return to its core constitutional principles.
