It is great to see the anti-ICLEI movement come to Virginia – today, the Charlottesville Tomorrow reports patriots and liberty activists reaching out to their Board of Supervisors and asking them to get out of ICLEI.  Tonight, there was a program in Charlottesville to fight ICLEI and sustainable development.  Tom DeWeese and tea party activist Dr. Charles Battig are the headline speakers.  The Jefferson Area Tea Party has asked local officials in the county to leave ICLEI.  One supervisor agrees:

At the work session, Supervisor Kenneth C. Boyd called for a withdrawal from ICLEI, citing potential directives Albemarle might have to take from an international organization.

“I see ICLEI as being … a way to get local governments to start forcing people into making energy decisions, and I don’t think that’s something we should be doing,” Boyd said. “Our literature … incorporates some things [from ICLEI] that says what we’ve got to do is force our public to be efficient.”

Good for Supervisor Boyd!   Others did not agree:

Supervisor Dennis S. Rooker said that by focusing on an energy efficiency agenda in government buildings, the county had already recognized savings of about $600,000 in reduced utilities.

“Whether you believe in global warming or not, energy efficiency is smart from a dollar and cents standpoint; reducing pollution is smart from the standpoint of protecting the health of our citizens … to me those things are pretty wise to focus on,” Rooker said.

The anti-ICLEI sentiment was not acted on but this is encouraging in that Supervisor Boyd had been a 2007 supporter of ICLEI.  (I have a proposal for Supervisor Boyd:  Ask Attorney General Cuccinelli for an opinion on the legally of ICLEI under both the Constitution and Dillon’s Rule.)  Dr. Battig handed out this paper to the BOCS in February.

I am not taking this lying down; please respectfully contact (if you live in Albemarle County) your representatives and ask them to withdraw from ICLEI.  Go here.

I am seeing more and more activity against ICLEI and questions about sustainable development.  This is good.  Which of these Virginia jurisdictions will be the first to leave ICLEI?  Here’s two prior blog entries in re the unconstitutionality of ICLEI!  (Feel free to use them for advocacy and training.)
