THE NEXT TIME someone says OBAMACARE is the LAW of the LAND, tell ’em, SURE and SO WAS THE FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT of 1850!

I was glad to see (actually I was jealous [Lord forgive me!] that I did not blog on this first!) the NH state representative (NH has about a sixth of the population of Virginia but has 400 representatives in the lower chamber of the General Court!  Even I could run for state representative in NH!  Perhaps NH should become a unicameral legislature!) who compared Obamacare to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850!

During an Americans for Prosperity rally on Thursday, New Hampshire state Rep. Bill O’Brien (R) compared the Affordable Care Act to the Fugitive Slave Act.

“And what is Obamacare?” O’Brien, formerly the state’s House Speaker, asked. “It is a law as destructive to personal and individual liberty as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 that allowed slave owners to come to New Hampshire and seize African Americans and use the federal courts to take them back to federal… to slave states.”

No one can object to the characterization of the FSA of 1850.  It was a product of the so-called Compromise of 1850 and it strengthened a largely unenforceable 1793 federal act.  Slaves were returned by force from Northern states and those who tried to harbor or hide a runaway were prosecuted as felons!  But certainly the personal mandate, the loss of control over your health insurance in many cases and the intrusiveness of the Affordable Care Act are threats to liberty.

So I say, my hat’s off to Rep. O’Brien!  As it would have been right to defund the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, it is right to defund Obamacare!  Next time someone says, but Obamacare’s the law of the land!  Yes, and so was the FSA of 1850 and internment of Japanese Americans and the Alien and Sedition Acts and the first Lincoln income tax and draft, and etc…

One more thing:  If the supporters of Obamacare insist on shutting down the government before defunding Obamacare, it is thus not the GOP that is doing it!

It would be interesting to find out if slave owners provided health care to their slaves. Perhaps we have already had this discussion long ago?

Sandy, may I ask you a few questions?

    1) Just where is the “bullwhip” in ObamaCare? How can anyone compare anything in ObamaCare with slavery and beating people with a “bullwhip” to make them do the labor to build the foundation of a nation?

    2) How long can a nation whose very foundation was built by people on the end of a bullwhip survive? There may yet be a price to be paid for that. Or, are we starting to pay the price now?

    3) Since I think that I may be the only ObamaCare supporter on the blog, just who is your audience?

It is very interesting to note that the Republicans say ObamaCare is a “Train wreck”. Now, they also say that if that “Train wreck” starts rolling down the tracks on Jan.1., it will still be a “Train wreck”. However, once started, it will be a “Train wreck” that the people will not want to stop riding or get off ??????? People will like being on a “Train wreck????

As far as the cost of ObamaCare goes, Ben Bernanke can just write another check, along with the $85B one he writes to Wall St. each month now. The private sector and Republicans have had every opportunity to prevent the need for government intervention. Greed got in the way. Now, it is time for government to get involved. It will be a rough first few years or more, as the Republicans will not quit. ObamaCare will most likely resemble the current state of the Republican Party, complete chaos, for a few years until they decide to destroy something else..But the alternative is much worse.

I would love to debate ObamaCare in a public forum, but can find no takers ?????

Thanks for your post, and I hope we can disagree and still be friends.

Gene asks good questions. I think there are better places than I am for the evils of the Affordable Care Act, e.g., Obamacare, but I would suggest that forcing people to buy a product that they may not want is not consistent with liberty. The ACA does not fee up the marker forces to lower health care of health insurance costs. I just heard in the last week or so that the ACA now requires doctors to ask intrusive sexual behavior questions. That just shows that when the government pays for your health care, they have the right to ask about your health, your diet, your habits. That is no conductive to liberty, either.

I also object to how it was passed; I do not believe it was the product of the type of debate and dialogue – it was forced through, deals were made. I think Newt Gingrich was right when he says that we need to be careful about major social engineering projects even Paul Ryan’s roadmap.

The ACA also turns Medicaid into an entitlement program instead of being a social safety net. That is bad policy.

I agree the GOP is in chaos – that is one reason I like the libertarian in this election for governor.

I do not know the demographics of our readers; we are glad that Gene comes and offers thoughtful comments. I invite Gene to guest blog on why we should not be afraid of the ACA. That would be a good addition to the blog for readers.

I try to disagree in a way that precludes permanent conflict! Feel free to come back often and if you think I unfairly slimed someone, call me on it!

Thanks again for coming by! Sandy

Sandy, as you know, the Supreme Court has ruled on the ACA. A court with a Conservative majority no less. One does not have to buy anything. However, if one does not have health insurance, they may have to pay a tax in some instances. Based on their income, they may be subsidized.

Where is the documentation on these questions that you heard about? Why not just refuse to answer them? Did you research to find out if they are the truth? Most of what is being said about the ACA is just lies, fertilized by the Right wing owned media. The truth is easy to find, but one has to want to find it.

Let’s face the truth here. Neither of us will ever most likely convince the other to change their minds about ACA.

Now, what that means to me is that ultimately we should compromise. The lack of compromise is exactly why we have the ACA. There are those that are determined to maintain double digit increases in the cost of healthcare/insurance at all costs, without compromise.

If the opposition to ObamaCare is not proof of why we need to get Corporate and special interest money out of government, nothing ever will be.

Why do we not take Corporate and Special Interest money out of government? Well, I am going to tell you. When you take Corporate and Special Interest money out of government you take something else out along with it, THE REPUBLICANS!

It also proves that the Right owns and controls the media. They use the left to create conflict so as to increase ratings, which increases profit. Then, they say the media is leftist. Typical Republican/Wall St. lies.

The truth is the exact opposite of what the Republicans tell us.
