I found this blog entry from Jerel D. “Jerry” Erickson, who lives in Sioux Falls, and most of this article is about garbage collection BUT this is exciting:

The city of Sioux Falls will not renew its membership in ICLEI, the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, according to Aimee Ladonsky, Director of Hazardous Waste.  You may not have known Sioux Falls was a member of ICLEI or even what it means to be a member.  ICLEI, the implementation arm of the United Nations and Agenda 21, gave us “Sustainability”.  Ms Ladonsky said she had something to do with our ICLEI association, adding that a resident had approached her with the idea (circa 2008).  With that caveat, she is absolved, and now we are saddled with a Sustainability Master Plan and “going green”.  In 2011, our City Council approved acceptance of a $200,000 Federal stimulus grant to hire Beck SAIC to write the 2 ½ inch-thick plan.  Open wide, Sioux Falls.

This is what happens when you bring ICLEI in:  it tends to cost more down the road!  BUT this is a great story and I have contacted Sioux Falls to see if true.
