It was 62 years (longer than the Saints but not longer than the Cubs!) since the two men’s bobsled team won a medal. Congrats to Steven Holcomb and Steven Langton!
But no more! In what could be called a minor miracle on ice – the USA team won the bronze medal in this event. I will admit the coverage is less jingoistic – actually a nice article about the gold medalist from Russia (Alexander Zubkov) who had given up the sport after four Olympics (or was it five?) but was drawn out of a desk job to compete once more in Russia. And he won the gold medal. It was exciting. His daughter is trying out for skeleton. If one of my kids tried out for skeleton, I don’t think I could watch that event! Tell me when it’s over.
Also, when ice dancing came out it seemed another sport that was in the Games to give USSR three more medals! We used to be terrible.
But we did it: Won gold at pairs ice dancing. It was nice to see although I am still skeptical about its sports status but it’s great that we won! Nothing like seventeen years of work – that ought to be used by parents to encourage their kids. Congrats to Meryl Davis and Charlie White!
No sports imperialism in either of these events. I do wonder: Why can’t a small nation, like say Zimbabwe or Botswana, simply design a better bobsled and then recruit the teams to win gold?
