Here’s a website from a Botswana newspaper about the five Olympic athletes carrying the hopes of a nation in the 2012 Games in London. Apparently the boxer Oteng Oteng is also a potential medalist, too. He boxes in the flyweight division. (I was a 98 lb wrestler so I understand the light division!) One highlight:
As the nation waits for the first Olympics medal, Staff Writers, FREDERICK KEBADIRETSE and MOSAH MOKGANEDI profile the men and woman tasked with breaking the 32 year-old jinx.
I’d still rather see the Botswana athletes participate than our men’s basketball team! Here’s another report from a Botswana newspaper. This highlight is the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Mr. Shaw Kgathi:
“By my own admission, this is perhaps one of the greatest teams to ever represent Botswana at the Olympics…. I must admit that when the Olympic movement was founded, it really never occurred to us that in our lifetime, we will be celebrating a Motswana world champion, let alone internationally-acclaimed athlete. Our present experience as a country lives true to the words once uttered by the founding President of this Republic, Sir Seretse Khama, who said, “It is not long before we dethrone the Russians of their medals and the English of their World Cup trophy.”
Maybe Botswana needs that curling program I recommended earlier? I’m certainly hoping the athletes do well and bring a medal or two home.
