Yes it’s almost time for the Olympics again – the Winter variety.  That means two things:  Sports Imperialism in the form of pros in hockey (although I admit the winter games are not as debauched as the summer variety) and the awesome, fabulous sport of curling!

If you live in the Commonwealth, here’s how to find other curlers:

The Curling Club of Virginia has this website and this FB page.  Can find out when learn to curl events and regular curling occur – at the IceZone in Midlothian.  Here’s the story of how it started!

There is also curling in Charlottesville (They had the first known curling in VA) at the Main Street Arena.

For those of you closer to DC, we have the Potomac Curling Club in suburban MD (They have a very nice site – my next goal is a nice site here in RVA!) and Chesapeake Curling Club a bit further out in Easton, MD.  Our regional club is the Grand National Curling Club.

If you are my reader far away from Virginia, try this site to find a club.  The important thing is to get out there and curl.

Of course my views on sports, or anything else, do not reflect the views of the CCVa or the GNCC or the US Curling Association!

About Elwood Sanders

Sandy was also Virginia's first Appellate Defender and also helped bring curling in VA! (None of these titles imply any endorsement of Sanders’ views)

  1. Gene Lefty says:

The Reason? Just like everything else, the Olympics are all about the cabbage. Greed. Never being happy with what one has. Always got to have more. Grow, Grow, Grow, until what is growing is no longer what was planted.

I like watching curling, but I doubt that any average person would have a chance at getting in the Olympics. I suspect that one would have to be rich, or well connected, or both. I do not believe that being the best would get you on a team anymore. Not impossible, but very close.

I saw a spot on TV the other day where they were talking about getting into Georgetown University. They were saying that the University lied, and that it was easier for people with means to get in.

Now, my point? Do you think that the people at the top in the news/entertainment business just walked in off the street? Nope, it is mostly an exclusive club for the rich and connected, just like the well known Universities that they were complaining about. Do you think the news people talking about Georgetown University just walked in and got hired? Nope, not going to happen.

How is sitting in a chair, with a $5000 suit, or RED MINI SKIRT, with $1000 heels, reading mostly lies from a teleprompter, considered a journalist? What a joke.

You see, people do not seem to realize that the media is one of the biggest discriminators of all time. How many minorities, obese, or unattractive people do you see at the top of network news? The percentages are low, very low. But, they get a pass, and get out of jail free card.

Welcome to World! It is what the people demand!
