The Sporting News is reporting that it is “highly likely” that the NHL players will play hockey in the 2014 Winter Olympics.
In a recent interview with the Olympic website Around the Rings, IIHF president Rene Fasel is confident that NHL players will participate in the Sochi games.
“I’m really confident that the NHL players will be in Sochi. We know the players want to be there. Many others, not just [top Russian player, Washington Capitals star and confirmed torchbearer] Alex Ovechkin have expressed their determination to go to Sochi.
“We know that all the four Olympics, we had the NHL players, and they have produced wonderful tournaments. We really know that the Olympic tournaments are good for our sport, in general for sport, and also for ice hockey.”
I respectfully disagree. I think pro athletes in the Olympics in sports imperialism. Ask yourself this question: Has there been any new national teams that have arisen in ice hockey since the pros came in? No. I didn’t think so. Time to free the Games from the dominance of the major powers. Open it up. No NHL players. Or have a two-tier competition – pro and amateur divisions.
