Is Obama Heading For a Tiananmen Square Incident in America?

Tiananmen Square Massacre

Tiananmen Square Massacre

Since the 1960’s, Americans have expressed their First Amendment right to free speech in great numbers previously unseen. Civil right’s protests, Anti-War protests, anti-abortion protests, pro-this and anti-that protests. Most are peaceful, or at least relatively so, others lead to arrests, property damage, and even a few deaths, the Kent State Massacre being a sad example of the results of an overanxious government to quell the protests.

The parallels between the Tiananmen Square Massacre and the Obama Administration’s handling of protests from both the left and the right are troubling, to say the least.

During the numerous protests of the past few decades, no efforts were made to hide the truth from the citizens. The media was allowed full and complete freedom to cover the events.

The same was not true during the Tiananmen Square incident. Chinese journalists were prohibited from reporting and foreign reporters were thrown out of the country.

As I watched the news coverage of the protests against Obama by those favoring a repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell military policy, specifically Obama’s failure to end the policy as promised, it was impossible not to recall the Tiananmen Square protests as the Capitol Police pushed the bystanders, reporters and photographers away from the protest scene.

It should be pointed out that the protesters were not violent, and had chained themselves to the White House fence. The President simply wanted to censor the news of left wingers dissenting with White House policies.

And it is hard to deny that the free speech rights of these protesters were trampled by this administration. While one’s constitutional right to free speech does not include a mandate that others listen, the implied freedom would state that forcefully removing those that wish to listen infringes on the right of free speech. Otherwise, the government could simply round up all that dissent with them, place them in a soundproof room and claim they may speak freely.

Previous administrations have allowed peaceful protests. Some have tried to listen and address the grievances of those compelled to protest. A lot of good has come from listening to the protesters including the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

This president either ignores, belittles or attacks any dissent and goes so far as to censor them.

This is exactly the same mindset that caused Tiananmen Square.
