Should America Consider a Teacher ‘Tenure Tax’?

Teachers and professors work in a world that often includes tenure. Which basically means that you have a job for life no matter what. It is nearly impossible to fire a tenured teacher. You could be removed from teaching students if you really screw up, but you still get paid.

The basic idea behind tenure is that it allows academic freedom so the professor is not constrained by the ideas of others and are free to explore academic endeavors and freedom in the hope of furthering education.

But we all know that what tenure does these days is allow professors to fill kid’s heads with socialist and communist crap with impunity. It allows teachers to force kids to conform to the professor’s (usually leftist) ideology and the teacher is free to fail the student for, say, being a global warming skeptic. Or believing free markets work.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all had tenure? Imagine a mechanic that is free to repair your car however he sees fit. Or the person that paints the lines on the roads. Shouldn’t he be free to think outside the lines?

Or umpires. Or pilots.

And the really sad part of tenure is that teachers are guaranteed jobs for life mostly at taxpayer’s expense.

But how much is tenure worth? Surely a lifetime job has a great value. It is far and away a greater benefit than the average Joe has.

President Obama wants everyone to pay their fair share.

It seems fair that these highly paid teachers or professors, in exchange for that lifetime job benefit, pay a tax on that perk.

Perhaps a 20% “tenure” tax would be “fair”. And the “revenues” could go to offset the cost of tuition, or perhaps student loan interest rates.

See, right now, tenured professors have no “skin in the game”.

And perhaps we could also look at taxing union memberships. Not quite the long term guarantee of employment, but an untaxed benefit to be sure.

We need to start closing these Tenure and Union loopholes!
