Why “The Left” is Winning the Culture Wars: And How To Stop Them

The American Culture war can not be fought with competing ideals. Nor can it be fought with mere ideas, nor images, nor a defense of tradition, nor anything we’ve tried in the past. We must ask ourselves, first, why are we losing the culture war? And second, if our strategy isn’t working, why are we continuing to employ it?

Was it Allen West who said, that if you find yourself in a fair fight, you’re doing something wrong? This is what I see conservatives engaging in with liberals – a fair fight. Our ideals versus your ideals. Our traditions versus your traditions (or lack thereof). Our beliefs versus your beliefs. Essentially, conservatives are waging a war of subjectivity against an enemy that has mastered the art of subjectivity and propaganda. So actually, conservatives aren’t even finding themselves in a fair fight. They’ve allowed liberals to choose the higher ground, decide the battlefield, and to define the rules of engagement.

Conservatives have lost the initiative. They need to get it back.

Some Libertarians will understand what I’m about to say; and some will not. My hope is to convince conservatives of a new cultural strategy. Students of Ayn Rand, or Aristotle, or Francis Bacon will understand my tact immediately. I will try to employ their wisdom in defense of what I propose.

The key to defeating liberals is the pursuit of rigorous truth, honesty, and correctness. Ideals, opinions, beliefs, and traditions are sacred to the individual that holds them, but they have no power outside of the mind that has embraced them. Logic and Sermons never convince. Instead, pound your enemy with truth. Make them take indefensible positions. Force them to prove themselves the charlatans that they are!

Francis Bacon quipped that, “Knowledge is power”. Therefore, conservatives should make the pursuit of objective knowledge their most formidable discipline.

How insane is it that Democrats, the principle champions of slavery and segregation, the founders of the Ku Klux Klan, and stained with a legacy of historical racism, should be allowed to stand, virtuously, and condemn their own Confederate Flag? How is this possible without people bursting into furious laughter? We should all be able to sue President Obama and Democrat Party for pain and suffering caused by the persistent clenching of our stomach muscles as we ball over with laughter. We should all be sporting six pack abs from laughing so hard. Laughing is exercise, but too much exercise is abuse; and somebody owes me restitution!

They get away with it because of ignorance. True, this ignorance is by design, because we have allowed liberals to control our government run schools and universities, but the cause is ignorance nonetheless.

In Aristotle’s Metaphysics, he dictated, “The investigation of the truth is in one way hard, in another easy. An indication of this is found in the fact that no one is able to attain the truth adequately, while, on the other hand, no one fails entirely, but everyone says something true about the nature of all things, and while individually they contribute little or nothing to the truth, by the union of all a considerable amount is amassed”.

Alas, this is not merely true of truth, but of untruth! And by the union of all considerable untruths great frauds and lies are perpetuated amongst the people! That we have allowed this is on us. We have not been diligent in our pursuit of truth. We have accepted, as natural, as tolerable, the people’s embrace of untruth.

Ronald Reagan brilliantly pointed this out when he said, “It isn’t so much that liberals are ignorant. It’s just that they know so many things that aren’t so”. President Reagan didn’t tolerate it and neither should we today.

Only the rigorous pursuit of truth can save America.

In Ayn Rand’s Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, she writes, “Truth is the product of the recognition (i.e., identification) of the facts of reality. Man identifies and integrates the facts of reality by means of concepts. He retains concepts in his mind by means of definitions. He organizes concepts into propositions—and the truth or falsehood of his propositions rests, not only on their relation to the facts he asserts, but also on the truth or falsehood of the definitions of the concepts he uses to assert them, which rests on the truth or falsehood of his designations of essential characteristics”.

In other words, the mental conceptualization and context within which “facts” are understood by an individual must be as objectively reflective of reality as the facts themselves. How often do we read or hear propaganda perpetuate a fraud by employing facts through contexts which simply do not pertain to those facts!?!

Every tenant of the Marxist political ideologies, be they Communism, Socialism, or Liberalism; as with the tenants of Corporatism, Fascism, and Theological Totalitarianism, are objectionable to reality. It is not that their beliefs and propositions offend our traditions, our beliefs, our customs, or our philosophies, but that they offend nature herself! They are an insult to reality. They exist in defiance of all reason.

Therefore, it is with a profound commitment to that which our enemies reject that we defeat them.

Or have you bought into their propositions that you cannot prove what is true and what is false? Have you bought into their propositions that knowledge and morality are subjective? You see, they do not believe in truth, and therefore have no loyalty to proving their assertions. They do not believe in the human mind’s ability to reason, and thus pay reason no mind whatever. They do not believe that science actually discovers truth, and have moved, successfully I might add, to make our scientists their most potent weapons. Not with truth, but with lies.

That Global Warming, or Climate Change, or Climate Disruption, as a political thesis has been allowed to survive is reprehensible. That mob rule and egalitarianism, democratic utilitarianism, and moral subjectivism have been allowed to advance with such weak opposition is not the fault of those who seek to destroy truth, ignore reason, and abuse science, but the fault of those who have failed to defend them!

The only strategy capable of defeating the left is the rigorous pursuit of truth, knowledge, and correctness. This is a battlefield the left is ill-equipped to fight upon.

Draw them to that field of battle and I guarantee you certain victory.

“….the pursuit of rigorous truth, honesty, and correctness” is clearly the offensive tact against which the progressive left has no defense.

There’s one cable TV channel that mostly tells the truth. There are a dozen or so well known radio talk show personalities who espouse conservative beliefs. And a couple dozen nationally recognized conservative opinion columnists.
The problem is that they are all largely speaking to the same audience. Rush and Hannity have around 15-20 million regular listeners per week. But that’s really just 3 to 6 million of the same listeners every day. Those listeners were likely going to vote conservatively anyway.

Understanding that the quiet conservative masses of the political middle hear so little of the conservative message other than an occasional drive-by on the TV or radio dial, how do we get the truth to that critical political demographic and voting bloc?

We can’t just wish for the other news outlets to see the light. We can’t just wish that the writers and producers of television (other than Duck Dynasty and most of the Blue Bloods scripts) will suddenly reject the progressive leftist themes/storylines and project a truthful image of conservatives and conservative thinking.

How does “rigorous truth, honesty, and correctness” grow in importance to those who really need to understand and be excited enough to work and vote for real change?

Mike, you are dead on in your request. Sadly, there is only one answer. Us. TV and Radio aren’t the answer, we are. Our friends, family, community – we have to retake them from the government through our own rigorous pursuit of truth. But first, we have to know the truth. Not believe in it. But know it. Then spread the knowledge.

Upon securing a requested opinion written by our County Commonwealth Attorney I learned that on average KW County was spending $765 per month per employee on health insurance. $765 per month per employee. By the then acting County administrator own words he states ” I’ve looked at this and ours is out of line with other localities”

4 -5 years I have stood up at each public comment period and implored the members of our Board of Supervisors to do something about this, given the taxpayer , burdened by their own escalating health insurance premiums was paying 100% of single employee costs. This was/is beyond insane or inherently unfair but irresponsible on the part of our elected officials.

Perhaps the fact that 3 of the 5 Supervisors themselves were benefitting by this extravagant largesse , getting their own health insurance through this generous program, paying nothing towards it’s costs, allowing instead taxpayers to have to eat it 100% of the costs, when in the private sector today this is unheard of. Most employers do not go beyond paying the mandated 50%, leaving the remainder for the employee to pay if they want the coverage.

My point in sharing the details of this ties in with what Steve is saying, and as such we are now messaging local signs informing taxpaying citizens of King William that they are paying the said $765 a month on behalf of the spoiled employees who have the shield of official sanction behind the Supervisors allowing of this colossal rip-off.
Telling the truth———not allowing the Supervisors who are quoted every year in 2 local newspapers as having made ” tough choices” to balance the county budget, when it is an outright lie they promote by saying so.

Simple truth—taxpayers are being ripped off by this one clear easy to comprehend example is just such a measure we can take to expose at the local level one of the lies elected officials tell every year.

Every locality has this going on. I asked myself when I learned these specific details one question…….” how many citizens in King William know this, and how would they react if they did ” ?

Rest assured by November every citizen in this county will know this one simple fact, this one glaring example of how the supervisors lie each year when they claim to have made ” tough choices” You have to start somewhere, and this is a good of an example at the local level as one can find. More importantly, as Steve suggests—-you got to get the TRUTH out there.

Well, the culture wars at the university level are culminating in an intriguing phenomenon. Title IX discrimination charges are now being used to silence academic freedom in publication. There was a case covered by The Chronicle of Higher Education in which a Northwestern University professor was slapped with Title IX charges for writing about the injustice of Title IX. A quick review of the Title IX policies for public universities in Virginia will yield a vast accounting of rights of victims of alleged Title IX violations but precious little with regard to how those charged with Title IX violations may react to such charges or even be informed of them. I work at William & Mary and contacted our Title IX coordinator regarding the dearth of information available for alleged Title IX violators because the posted language made the entire process seem opaque; violators might not even know charges had been filed until the complaint reached the provost who might then make an employment termination decision.

These charges can be leveled for the most innocuous of activities: our mandatory Title IX training included an example that a photograph on the desk of an employee that depicted the employee in an evening gown (shoulders exposed) or a family member in a swimsuit could be a violation. Nevermind that said photograph was framed and placed on so the employee could see it when seated at his or her own desk. This isn’t pornography- it’s normal snapshot material. At the same time people are railing against school dress code policies that punish girls for wearing sleeveless shirts with a shoulder strap narrower than 4″, we’re criminalizing photographs seen only by legal adults.

As with many things, the pendulum swings.
